EU Report 2024: Key achievements and challenges of Ukraine in competition policy, including Ukraine’s path  strengthening the role of the AMCU and the need for legislative changes.

The European Commission’s 2024 Enlargement Package report on Ukraine – the first since the formal launch of accession negotiations and the second since Kyiv received candidate status – shows that competition policy is a key area where Ukraine has made progress, albeit with some reservations. This is good news in the context of the bilateral screening session on Chapter 8 of the EU Ukraine’s path  acquis scheduled for late January this year.

Competition policy is vital for ensuring a level playing field

It promotes innovation, prevents monopolistic practices and mint data protects consumers from anti-competitive behaviour by economic operators. For Ukraine, bringing its competition legislation into line with EU rules means not only complying with EU requirements, but also a decisive step forward towards a more sustainable economic structure. Thus, the main beneficiaries of competition policy reforms will be both Ukrainian companies and citizens.

The European Commission’s 2024 report is objective in its assessments
